Cornfield was active in a number of professional organizations. He was a Fellow and President (1974) of the American Epidemiologic Society, a member and President of the American Epidemiologic Society, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a member of numerous other professional organizations. Cornfield married Ruth Bittler in 1937. Together they had two children, Ann and Ellen. Cornfield died on September 17, 1979. Information for these biographical notes was obtained from the collection (MS-567) and "A Tribute" by Samuel W. Greenhouse. Further information was found in Proceedings of "Current Topicsin Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and in "A Memorial Symposium in Honor of Jerome Cornfield," published in Biometrics, volume 38 (March 1982): 3-6. The collection documents Jerome Cornfield's professional activities and research in the field of economic statistics and biostatistics, and includes biographical files, correspondence, writings, court testimonies, lecture notes, administrative files and research materials. Most of the collection documents Cornfield's work in biostatistics and health, but also contains records from his early work in economic statistics.

Jerome Cornfield was born on October 12, 1912 in New York City. He received his B.S. (1933) from New York University in history and economics. He was a graduate student at Columbia University (1933-1934), where he studied statistics and economics, and then at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School (1936-1938), where he studied statistics and mathematics.
